the conference that never was
so finally the opposition got together to organise a transparent, democratic, community conference to expose foss.in. Support snowballed - then came a lowlife called Kalia - took a prominent role in the fledgling conference without a name, and then one fine day he defected to the other side. Boom - no conference. Lessons learnt:

1. No edifice built on sand will stand long
2. Never trust a php guy.

AFAIK, This is my first personal direct troll attack ever. How thoughtful, I feel all grown up suddenly.

Dont feed the trolls

I think Noname Conf as a concept was cool. You guys just realized it takes a lot to pull of an event much less one of scale.

Just learn to respect people who have done that day in and out for 10 years, they might not match up to your ideological standpoint or standards but just making it happen is an effort worth applauding, even grudgingly.

Re: Dont feed the trolls

(I speak for myself, not everyone involved with nnc)

I have no anti-foss.in sentiments. The whole "expose foss.in" idea is pfft, I'm not India TV. I'm giving a talk at foss.in this year. Different ideas, different executions... I get the whole thing.

There's only one point of note here -- wat, who said NNC isn't happening? Hold your horses, people :)

Re: Dont feed the trolls

keep it up pal - I hear there are some keynote slots going - maybe you will get one of those! You *do* realise that your talk is utter crap (even by foss.in standards) and the only reason why it was chosen was to put a spoke in the no name conf preparations? Semantics through Drupal??? Sheesh!

Re: Dont feed the trolls

in the first place, I am not an organiser in noname conf. My role is limited to attending the conference and giving armchair advice to the organisers.

in the second place, I think you should study history. The first few highly successful linux-bangalore conference was *not* the efforts of the current 'team foss.in'. The current 'team' hijacked the original conference and has been running it for personal profit ever since.

I am afraid that I am unable to learn to respect people who, without contributing a line of code to anything are spreading the philosophy that contribution to code is the be all and end all of contribution. I am of the firm belief that contribution to foss includes - advocacy, conducting workshops in colleges for students and staff, translation, installation of foss labs in colleges, contributing code, contributing documentation, helping people to install and configure, and, most important, talking about foss. The ability to talk distinguishes us from apes - talk is not cheap. Foss.in is an insult to the vast majority of the Indian Foss community. And no self respecting Indian member of the foss community would be found dead there.

Wow :D "hijacked" and "personal profit" ??

Seems you were standing behind the doors (like every balaji telefilms serial) and listening to their secret meeting

I am not Atul Chitnis fan nor a member of the team.

foss.in for me (and for coming there) is a FOSS event.

Did you ever count the Line of Code contributed to FOSS in the event? Did you see the rise in number of people contributing to the foss after the event?

Bashing people is more easier than contributing code. And you chose an easier alternative.

Re: Dont feed the trolls

where is the code contributed during the event? and foss is not about contribution of code. It is far more than that. And actually contribution of code is easy and fun - it is the other aspects of contribution that is difficult, time consuming, unrewarding and tedious. Foss.in insults all these people who do this.

lines of code != quality of code != practical purpose of code != "sole contribution that foss needs"

although you are not the first slime-ball to pollute my blog, I am still not used to it - forgive me if I puke

What do you mean by "community conference to expose foss.in" ?

when they first set up their website, they had something like this: 'Some of us are dissatisfied with the way foss conferences are being held in Bangalore and hence want to hold a real foss conference'. Later, this disappeared from the site. But this says it all: http://fsck.in/

So how did that "expose" foss.in ?

Re: foss.in

Who care for exposing & they make fun of me when I told name of my college....maybe only IIT student is allowed in foss.in.....we need nice floss conferencee that allow all to speak on the linux work they do........

as anyone who has anything to do with foss knows, students of elite institutions are the last people to get involved in foss. The only foss in foss.in is the 'foss' in the title. They are about creating a caste system in the community.

I read the line 'Some of us are dissatisfied with the way foss conferences are being held in Bangalore and hence want to hold a real foss conference'.

And the statement never said they are going to expose anyone in the conf. Your blog post says so.

No its not. Thats you assumption.

based on knowledge of the people involved and on the conversations on the mailing list. For example: http://groups.google.com/group/nonameconf-community/msg/79117e75b099044a

Since I took an active interest in the initial discussions, I completely agree with Lawgon's view that this was an event which targeted to challenge FOSS.in. I mean if someone says it wasn't, then why did the organizers plan to do it in December in Bangalore and that too at such a short notice?

It's sad it didn't take off the way it could have...

I guess it has more to do with lack of time, leadership and organization skills. And also I guess a vast silent majority who wanted to chip in quickly figured out that this was not going to fly....

> that too at such a short notice?

AFAIR, mukt.in v1, was organised in < 30 days.
Turned out > 150 people to the event.

With help of couple of really good Samaritan speakers from foss community chennai, 1 Sun employee, 1 supporter from nrc-foss, foss enthu students, word-of-mouth(email) publicity in ilugc and 2 co-founders burning cash off their tiny pockets.

One of the co-founders definitely had the every intend to prove that so called "lowlifes" in foss can make a difference. And it did get proved.

I am sure, NNC could have done it/can do it still.
Just need to stick firm on the ground.
