back to kde
upgraded to FC11 and shifted back to KDE from gnome (gnome sucks big time). I had shifted to gnome in FC10 because KDE did not have a graphical network management tool. The KDE in FC11 has such a tool, so I am now quite confortable. The biggest headache in gnome was that I used KDE apps a lot and could not set the default browser to firefox, so had keep cutting and pasting urls which is a huge PITA.

I used the very first version of GNOME that shipped with RH 6.1 or a version close to that. It sucked molasses even the first time - nobody who respects users or cares an iota about usability would ship stuff like that. So they blamed it on Rasterman and his window manager enlightenment. He quit from RH. Then the Eazel guys tried earnestly and then their startup went down during the dot-com bust. Eazel was the last hope for good taste and they really took that hope with them. The Ximian desktop which became part of Novell Linux was a lot cleaner with sensible defaults, but they didn't make any big leaps of imagination. Add to this the politics between Novell and RH, etc. Andy Hertzfeld of Eazel had worked on the original Mac team. He had some memorable things to say about GNOME:

One of the reasons the free software desktop is such a mess is because programmers somehow think designing good UIs is easy and don't give good UI design the respect that it deserves. Most importantly programmers should be honest with themselves and step away from UI work. Mac guy John Gruber wrote a terrific post titled 'Ronco spray on usability' that attempts to explain why free desktops suck. Another reason is that most programmers working on free desktops are at an age where they have more technical brilliance than empathy. But the latter is more important for designing usable software.

No free software usability doesn't suck .

And for your information GNOME is more than ussable .. I can't speak technical jargon or how you have defined usability .

You first go check out GNOME usability project

In simple words lemme tell you how usable gnome is : my cousin studyig 9th class who rarely uses computer comes to my machine logs in with her username and password to gnome .. clicks on apps -> games -> Nibbles and happily plays it .

Sometimes these days she also browses internet via epiphany-browser happily .

KDE on the other hand with with its 4.0 and 4.1 was kind of disaster on usability because of the sole reason that the goal of KDE4 desktop is great .

4.2 is very usable and is revolutionary . Just check out 4.3 which will be out soon in distros then come back and talk on free desktop usability

Why? KDE is definitely superior. Gnome started out superior and in kde 2 days gnome was better(even though I used kde then all the time).
But after 3.5 and now to 4.0, kde whips gnome thoroughly!
