should volunteers be professional?
I see this again and again. A guy volunteers to do something - maybe help out in running a golf tournament or pitch in to design a site. And, at a crucial moment the guy vanishes. Either doesn't do the job or does it in a half baked way which entails double the work rectifying what he has done. Question him? Hey, this is voluntary work - its up to me to decide what to do and how much to do. Sheesh.

Sir,
Even Paid professionals leave midway or just disappear without completing the projects / modules. What do you expect from volunteers without committment.

a person who leaves midway or disappears is not a professional. And you can also sue his ass off. I expect commitment from volunteers too. And also the ability to take criticism in the right spirit. In our country, even the most absolute junk is sacrosanct if it is labelled with CC or GPL. Not only the author, but all kinds of people will jump on you if you dare to criticise any of this stuff.

I remember back when I was volunteering a lot, it was often to learn stuff. I took it as seriously as I would a paid job, and my volunteer gigs led to paying jobs. Now I don't have time for volunteer jobs anymore, because I have too much paid work.

I say why take it on if you're gonna be half-assed about it? That's much harder to fix than not doing it at all. If you make an agreement that you're gonna work on something, do it, otherwise, leave it alone.
